Brexit campaign rickrolled after failing to buy VoteLeave domains

The Britain out team didn't plan ahead quite enough with their web addresses

The website and several similar websites now redirect to a YouTube video of Rick Astley‘s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, after a savvy web buyer snapped up the domains before the Brexit campaign group could get hold of them.

According to The Spectator, Mario Van Poppel – a Belgian expat living in London – is responsible for buying up the domains.

Vote Leave was recently confirmed as the official EU exit campaign for the forthcoming referendum, yet Van Poppel’s purchases include a range of possible web locations based on their official name, including,, and, all of which redirect to Astley’s video.

Late last year, online trolls forced a choirmaster to abandon an attempted 75 hour Astley marathon.

A 23-year-old choirmaster from Southampton gave up his attempt at an interactive, 75-hour listening spree of Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ on Friday (October 16). Jack White (not that one)’s attempt at 1,274 repeat listens of the song was part of a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

White interrupted his listening marathon after eight hours because of abusive internet trolls levelling abuse at him and his seven-year-old nephew, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes, on his live Youtube page.
