US pear farmers pleased with Rick Ross endorsement

Rapper partially attributes weight loss to a diet that includes pears

Rick Ross has been acknowledged by farming organisation USA Pears for endorsing the fruit.

During an interview with Tim Westwood in May, the rapper partially credited eating pears for his recent weight loss. That snippet was later posted as a Vine that subsequently went viral.

“I eat pears now and shit like that. Shout out to all the pear,” asserted Ross with a thumbs up. He has since become synonymous with the fruit. Gawker has pointed out the tide of pear emojis appearing in comments posted on his Instagram page, while he’s even been asked to sign a pear by a fan – a request that Ross obliged.

Such has been the increased interest in the product that USA Pears, a non-profit marketing organisation to promote fresh pears grown in Oregon and Washington, have been moved to comment on Ross’s endorsement.

“On behalf of our 1,600 pear growers from the Northwest region, we are pleased that Rick has mentioned the health benefits of pears,” spokesperson Kathy Stephenson wrote in an email to Modern Farmer. “Overall, we could not be more pleased with our message being delivered to a new, young and hip demographic.”

The longer version of the interview is available via YouTube and reveals Ross’s weight loss to be also down to visits to the gym. It also shows Westwood completing Ross’s now infamous, “Shout out to all the pear” line with the word “…eaters”.

The 38-year-old’s new album ‘Hood Billionaire’ is due to be released on Monday (November 24).
