Stern made the comments during his Sirius XM radio show
Sam Smith has seemingly responded to Howard Stern’s comments that he’s a “fat ugly motherfucker” by saying he “can’t believe what he’s read” and telling his fans to “ignore” Stern.
Stern made the comments during a countdown of the top songs on his Sirius XM radio show. He was discussing Smith’s hit track ‘Stay With Me’ when he decided to pay Smith the backhanded compliment. “You know what I like about the guy? He’s an ugly motherfucker,” he said. “He’s fat. Is he gay? He looks gay to me, not that anybody looks gay, but he does seem effeminate.”
Stern continued: “I like that he’s chubby and gay. That’s why I love him. He’s one of those guys I feel like, he’s really good, but I feel like that will be his only hit song – beautiful voice. That’s how good that song is. He’s fat and he’s gay and little girls worship him. That’s when you know you have a good song and a good voice.”
The DJ went on to say that he would like to get Smith on his show to “congratulate him on beating the odds”, before calling him the “male Adele”.
Smith later took to Twitter to write that he “can’t believe what I’ve just read.” In another post, thought to be be about Stern’s comments, he simply wrote: “Ignore”.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Sam Smith had been forced to pay songwriting royalties to Tom Petty for ‘Stay With Me’ after listeners noted a similarity between the song and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ 1989 classic ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Smith and Petty settled out of court in October – an arrangement that included a 12.5 per cent writing credit to both Petty and singer-composer Jeff Lynne. A representative for Sam Smith later said the likeness between the songs was a “complete coincidence”.
