ON THE COUCH WITH SHOLA AMA

Mary J Blige once told her to follow her heart (but never said anything about being a name-dropper)...

What song describes you best?

‘She’s In Fashion’ by Suede. That’s my tune!”

What is heaven?

“Never being tired or, the complete opposite, always being able to sleep!”

What is hell?

“Early flights!”

What is your earliest memory?

“Being in the Caribbean when I was four years old in the sea watching this man swim really far out and getting scared for him!”

What’s your greatest fear?

“The dark. I sleep with the TV on. I’m the sort of person that turns off the light and then runs up the stairs really quickly.”

Who is your all-time hero?

Eric Clapton. He’s such a great musician and he’s been through a lot and you can hear it in his work.”

What’s the worst trouble you’ve been in?

“Brushes with the law, but we won’t go into that!”

Who was the first love of your life?

“My music.”

Upon whom would you most like to exact revenge?

“The girls that tried to beat me up in college. Actually, I don’t wish bad things on people who do bad things to me. I think that if you don’t wish ill, then you don’t get any ill.”

What’s your greatest talent?

“I’m really good with make-up – I’m always styling my friends. Then, of course, singing. I have many talents. I’m also a good poet and storyteller.”

What’s your most treasured possession?

“My house. And everything in it!!”

What have you most regretted doing while drunk?

“Passing out in front of a police car on a dual carriageway! I was in Somerset and I got drunk one night and it all ended up in the paper!”

What can you cook?

“Nearly everything, really. But my favourite would have to be jerk chicken and some good West Indian food like my nan would make.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Mary J Blige once told me that in this business, I should keep my head up, not let people discourage me and follow my heart.”

Can you read music?

“I can’t. I used to be able to but I’ve forgotten!”

If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?

“I would play my album in the house of someone whose opinion of it I wanted to hear. And then I would hear what they really thought of it!”

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

“For everyone to love my album! Second wish would be to find happiness from the inside, and the third is to be a light for others and bring happiness to other people.”
