Skepta recruits ‘Luther’ actor Idris Elba for upcoming ‘Shutdown’ remix

Grime MC says forthcoming remix is "all about spreading the British sound and culture"

Skepta has revealed that Luther actor Idris Elba will appear on the remix to his new single ‘Shutdown’.

The song, which was released officially this week (April 26), has a remix on the way and the UK grime MC announced the first big name guest during a recent interview on CapitalXtra’s Norté Show. Skepta also revealed that the remix would feature another well-known rapper alongside Elba.

“Basically a lot of people have asked to jump on Shutdown remix, I’m not gonna front,” Skepta said. “But ’cause of quality control we wanted to make it really big, it’s all about spreading the British sound and culture.”

“Shutdown remix. Skepta. Idris Elba and another big rapper,” he added. “Featuring someone else, another big rapper, it’s game over.”

Idris Elba, who has also appeared in The Wire and recently revealed that he is working on an album inspired by his Luther character, first expressed his interest in working with Skepta last month. He tweeted a video directly to Skepta. The actor captioned it “put me on the remix!!!! ‘Cause I SHUT DOWN prime TV on the regular.”

Skepta recently shared the video for ‘Shutdown’. The clip was directed by FKA Twigs collaborator Grace LaDoja, while the song features a sample of a viewer responding to the MC’s appearance at the 2015 BRIT Awards with Kanye West, calling it “aggressive” and “intimidating”.

Earlier this year, it was rumoured that West and Skepta were in the studio together.
