Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss launches beauty website

Beauty Lies Truth aims to educate and inspire people to use environmentally-friendly products

Sleigh Bells‘ Alexis Krauss has launched a beauty website aimed at promoting environmentally-friendly cosmetics.

The singer has joined forces with her friend, Harvard Business School student Jessica Assaf, to set up Beauty Lies Truth – the strapline of which is “the beauty industry needs a makeover”.

The blog includes tutorials on how to make your own face creams and scrubs, as well as information about the potentially toxic chemicals in mainstream beauty products.

Speaking about why she launched the site, Krauss told MTV: “I just had this epiphany and realised I was totally ignorant about the products I was using… I’m an ethical consumer, and then I realised, ‘Holy shit. I think about all this stuff I put in my body, but I don’t know about any of the shit I’m putting on my skin.'”

She added that she wanted to inspire women to make more informed choices about what products they use. “[The website is] for people who want to look good, want to wear lipstick, and don’t just want to go all-natural because that’s not realistic for the average person. I want to wear mascara, I want to wear eyeshadow, I want to wear perfume, I want to wear body lotion, but I want to do it and know that I’m not compromising my health for the sake of looking good.”

The singer says she has also talked to Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) about potentially contributing to the site in future too. “Ultimately, the goal is to start curating content from all types of women and all types of people who are interested in these issues, whether they’re doctors or nail artists,” she said.

Sleigh Bells released their third album ‘Bitter Rivals’ last year.
