Smashing Pumpkins confirm new drummer

Billy Corgan has teamed up with a 19-year-old relative unknown

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced that their new drummer is a 19 year-old.

In March, frontman Billy Corgan announced an open call to find a suitable sticksman to replace original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

In a statement on Smashing Pumpkins‘ official website, Corgan explained why teenager Mike Byrne stood out during the auditions.

“Through the open audition process, I was astounded by how many great drummers there were that wanted the chance to try out for the Pumpkins. We counted over 1,000 submissions, and what made Mike stand out was he just seemed to have that ‘X Factor’ that all the great drummers have, a stunning blend of power, speed, and grace. I’m excited to work with him moving forward – he truly deserves this opportunity. I believe in my heart he will push me to be a better musician.”

Speaking of his new appointment, the Portland, Oregon-based Byrne said he was “super-excited to be playing with the band”, and added that it was a “dream come true”.

Byrne is expected to make his live debut with Corgan at six solo southern California club dates later this August.

Billy Corgan is set to play the following dates:

Visalia CA Tazzaria (August 26)
Santa Barbara CA Muddy Waters (27)
Long Beach CA Open (28)
Pioneertown CA Pappy & Harriet’s Palace (29)
San Diego CA Che Café (30)
Los Angeles CA Hotel Café (31)
