Billy Corgan says he and Kurt Cobain were the best writers, ‘everybody else a distant third’

"I like to think a lot of the crap music that followed wouldn’t have existed if he had been around to criticise it" says Corgan

Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins has said that he and Kurt Cobain were the two best writers of their generation, placing “everybody else a distant third.”

Corgan was asked about his relationship with the former Nirvana frontman in a new interview with The Independent. He went on to describe Cobain’s importance to the music scene prior to his death.

“I had a much more personal perspective, because I’d been in contact with Courtney [Love] through a lot of the setting up of that period, and afterwards. I found it devastating because, whether we wanted to admit it or not, he was quarterback of the football team, leading the aesthetic and integrity charge. He knew how to navigate those things.”

“Now, he and I didn’t necessarily get along,” Corgan admitted. “But I like to sing his praises, because he really was that talented. I like to think the world with him would have been a better place, and I like to think a lot of the crap music that followed wouldn’t have existed if he had been around to criticise it. Because he had the moral standing to slay generations with a strike of the pen.”

Corgan criticised Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder after it was mentioned to him that he’d felt “survivor’s guilt” following Cobain’s suicide in 1994. “That would be Eddie Vedder … Somehow he makes it about him even when it’s about somebody else!” Corgan said.

Earlier this year Courtney Love claimed that she is the subject of several of Smashing Pumpkins songs – and that when Corgan stopped penning songs about her the band “stopped making hits”. Love briefly dated Corgan before marrying Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and said that much of Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 album ‘Siamese Dream’ is actually about her.

Smashing Pumpkins’ tenth album ‘Monuments to an Elegy’ will be released on December 8, with another record entitled ‘Day for Night’ expected for 2015.
