Three of Smashing Pumpkins’ original line-up photographed in studio

The frontman has been hinting at a reunion of the band's classic line-up for over a year

Billy Corgan has shared a photo of him hanging out in the studio with his original Smashing Pumpkins bandmates Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha.

The frontman has been teasing a reunion of the Pumpkins’ classic line-up, which includes drummer Chamberlin, guitarist Iha and bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, since 2016.

Posting the picture on Instagram yesterday (January 16), Corgan added the caption: “Not sure what cross-eyed spy took this photo, but we had a visitor to the studio the other day. So many memories when you put the three of us together.”

He previously had posted on the photo-sharing platform that he and Chamberlin were “working on a song called ‘Route 666′”. It is unclear if Iha is now involved in the sessions or not. The guitarist played a handful of shows with Smashing Pumpkins in 2016, while the drummer rejoined the group as a touring member the year prior.

While Corgan has been talking about reuniting the original line-up for a while, Chamberlin also hinted a reformation could be happening last summer.

Speaking to WGN Radio, he said: “We were talking about playing next year with the band and somebody asked me, you know, ‘What’s it like trying to co-ordinate that?’”

He continued: “I said it’s like ‘Grumpy Old Men 3, only there’s four grumpy old men and one’s a woman’. So… that’s how it’s gotten to be.”
