St Vincent on injuring security guard at gig: ‘I thought I killed him’

The incident happened when Clark fell from a speaker stack at a show in Knoxville, Tennessee during May

St Vincent has discussed a recent incident at a gig which saw her accidentally injuring a member of the security staff.

Currently on tour in support of her 2014 self-titled LP, the musician – real name Annie Clark – suffered minor injuries following a fall from a speaker stack at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 31.

Clark had climbed from the stage to the top speaker during one of her songs, suffering a fall, bringing a speaker down with her and on top of a security guard.

Speaking at Toronto’s Luminato festival recently, where she was part of David Byrne’s’ ‘Contemporary Color’ collaborative performance, Clark said of the incident: “I tried to climb a speaker that I thought was tied down to the other speaker and was safe to climb. I looked at the security people like ‘this is cool, right? I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna climb up on top of this'”.

She added: “There was a really cool security guard named Patrick who was there buttressing me, and I was halfway up the speaker, and I fell on the stage pretty hard and hit my head, and for a moment thought, ‘Oh God, Where am I?’ When I kind of came to, I hadn’t realised that the guy who was over there was the security guard.”

“So I get up, and I’m looking, and I’m terrified, like almost in tears. ‘Where’s the guy? Where is he? Where did he go?’ And I’m thinking, ‘I just killed somebody’. It was so horrifying. It was really emotional and horrible, and luckily he was totally okay. None of us had concussions; he had a little cut on his eyebrow but it was so horrifying. It’s one thing to think, ‘I’ll get a bruise, I’ll get this or that,’ but it’s another to think that in a moment of spontaneity you could actually hurt someone.”

Following the original accident, Clark tweeted: “Patrick, security guard at Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, likely saved my life tonight… More importantly, Patrick is also ok. Thank god.” She also described the security guard, Patrick Green, as a “prince” for his actions.

Green, who suffered a facial cut but said he was “a little swollen but no headaches”, described the incident on Twitter, writing: “[Clark] was climbing the speaker stack during the show and the top speaker came down. I was under her and manage to push her… onto the stage with one hand and I tried to block the speaker with the other. I caught the corner of the speaker to my eyebrow. I’m just glad she’s ok.”

St Vincent is reported to have finished the show, later uploading a photo of her bandaged arm to Instagram.

Meanwhile, St Vincent recently appeared on a new track by the Chemical Brothers, titled ‘Under Neon Lights’. The song will appear on the duo’s new album ‘Born In The Echoes’, out on July 17.

British model Cara Delevingne recently discussed her relationship with Clark in the July issue of Vogue. The pair are rumoured to have been dating since earlier this year.

“I think that being in love with my girlfriend is a big part of why I’m feeling so happy with who I am these days,” Delevingne is quoted as saying. “And for those words to come out of my mouth is actually a miracle”.

Annie Clark will also host a show on Apple Music’s new Beat 1 radio station, alongside the likes of Josh Homme, Dr Dre, Pharrell Williams, Drake and more.

St Vincent released her self-titled fourth album in 2014, NME’s Number One album of that year. The record followed Clark’s previous albums ‘Marry Me’ (2007), ‘Actor’ (2009), ‘Strange Mercy’ (2011) and her collaborative album with David Byrne ‘Love This Giant’ in 2012.
