Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel among artists to receive ASCAP Centennial Award

Awards to mark the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers' 100th anniversary

Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Joan Baez and Stephen Sondheim are to receive ASCAP Centennial Awards to celebrate the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ 100th anniversary.

Newsday reports that the awards will be presented at a gala fundraiser at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York on November 17.

“Each of our ASCAP Centennial Award recipients is in a class of his or her own, as the creator and performer of songs that have touched the lives of people across the globe,” said ASCAP president Paul Williams in a statement. “It’s wonderful to be able to salute them on the occasion of ASCAP’s Centennial year and, as important, to raise funds to perpetuate the important work being done by The ASCAP Foundation.”

The ASCAP is an association consisting of 500,000 American composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. The organisation’s work includes protecting its member’s rights by licensing and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of their copyrighted work. The association’s foundation is committed to a variety of educational and humanitarian programs that serve the music community.

Wonder’s song ‘Another Star’ was recently featured by the BBC for coverage of this year’s World Cup. Originally featured on the 64-year-old’s 1976 album ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’, its inclusion on the BBC’s opening credits marked the first time Wonder had given approval for his work to be used in such a way.
