Stormzy scoops three MOBO Awards as Jeremy Corbyn praises grime’s political voice

"It's more important than ever that we celebrate black excellence"

Stormzy came out on top at last night’s MOBO Awards, winning three awards, while Jeremy Corbyn shared a message of support for all those at the ceremony.

The ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ star won the gongs for Best Male, Best Album and Best Grime Act, following an incredible year which saw that debut album hit Number One, before he performed at the BRIT Awards and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Elsewhere, J Hus walked away with the Best Song award for ‘Do You See’, while Giggs was named best hip-hop act. Craig David won best R&B/soul, while Stefflon Don walked away with the Best Female award.

In a pre-recorded video message, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also shared some words of support. “The MOBOs play a crucial role in the British music industry, showcasing music of black origin,” he said.

“It’s more important than ever that we celebrate black excellence and recognise the achievements of black communities.

“This year grime artists played a huge part in setting the agenda for British music and in the General Election, your contribution helped secure the highest youth turnout in a quarter of a century, showing the positive impact grime has on our society.”

Last month it was revealed that 58% of grime fans voted Labour in the last election. Check out Jeremy Corbyn’s MOBO Awards message below, along with the full list of winners.
