Joe Skyward of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Posies dies aged 57

Bassist replaced Foo Fighters' Nate Mendel in Sunny Day Real Estate

Joe Skyward, a member of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Posies, has passed away following a battle with prostate cancer.

Skyward was bassist in emo outfit Sunny Day Real Estate in 1998. He replaced Foo Fighters’ Nate Mendel in the band.

The musician, also known as Joe Bass, served in power-pop group The Posies from 1994–99 and then again during their reunion in 2013 and 2014.

The Posies confirmed the news via Facebook, writing that Skyward was “positive to the end” and “went surrounded by friends and family”.

“We had many great years with Joe and loved him very much. We still do. Rest in peace, rest in space, rest in bass… We will miss you Joe,” the statement added.

“Joe was larger than life, talented, possessed of a huge heart and an equally large appetite for living…he was one of a kind,” The Posies’ Jon Auer wrote in a separate statement. “I loved him very, very much. I’m thankful for the many great and crazy times spent with him.”

As well as the aforementioned bands, Skyward (born Joseph Howard) also played with The Walkabouts, the Long Winters and Sky Cries Mary.
