FURRYMANIA!

The psychedelic popsters win the Best Band, Best Album, Best Single and Best Video gongs...

Super Furry Animals swept the board at the first WELSH MUSIC AWARDS in CARDIFF last night (December 6).

The band won Best Video and Best Single gongs for ‘Juxtapozed With U’, Best Album for ‘Rings Around The World’, and they beat Manic Street Preachers and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci to the title of Best Welsh Band.

None of the Super Furry Animals were able to attend the event at Cardiff Coal Exchange, though Stuart Cable of Stereophonics was there to scoop up his band’s award for Best Pop Act, and Lostprophets played a three-song set after being named Best Newcomers.

Tom Jones was given a lifetime achievement accolade, and the Manic Street Preachers were praised for their “outstanding contribution to rock and pop music”.

Other winners included Best Female Charlotte Church and Best Male David Gray, and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci were named Best Welsh Language Band. The International Award went to Radiohead.

Last night’s ceremony was the first of two events that are being lined up in the Welsh capital. The Welsh record industry ‘WRITS’ awards are due to take place in January.
