ANIMAL(S) HISTORY LESSON!

Gruff and Daf's first band Ffa Coffi Pawb are remembered...

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS‘ label PLACID CASUAL are to release a compilation of songs by singer GRUFF RHYS and drummer DAFYDD IEUAN’s first band FFA COFFI PAWB.

‘Am Byth’, out August 2, brings together tracks taken from

the band’s four albums, various 12-inch releases, flexidiscs and one-off

songs from Welsh language compilations, most of which feature on CD for the

first time.

Ffa Coffi Pawb existed between 1986 and 1993. The band, who formed in Bethesda, north Wales, were instantly banned from the Welsh media as their name, a verbal practical joke, sounded alarmingly like ‘Fuck Off Everybody’ when spoken out loud. It actually means ‘Everybody’s Coffee Beans’.

Ffa Coffi Pawb recorded three albums for Ankst, and one extremely limited edition cassette only release for their own label, ‘Siwgwr’, with 1992’s final release ‘Hei Vidal!’ widely regarded as their finest.

Ffa Coffi Pawb only ever played two gigs in London, and with the exception of a tour of Holland and Friesland, stuck to a regime of constantly touring Wales.

After the band’s demise in 1993, Rhys and Ieuan were joined by Huw Bunford and Guto Pryce from U.Thant and Cian Ciaran from Wwzz to form Super Furry Animals. Ffa Coffi Pawb’s guitarist, Rhodri Puw, joined Cornelius

to replace departed guitarist John Lawrence and also records as Psycho VII, whilst bassist Dewi Emlyn has toured behind the scenes with Cornelius, Super Furry Animals, Mogwai and [a][/a].
