The 1975 go straight to Number One in US with second album

'I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It' is also Number One in the UK

The 1975 are celebrating transatlantic success after their new album went to Number One in the US just days after also topping the UK Album Chart.

‘I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It’ is the band’s second album and features the singles ‘The Sound’ and ‘Love Me’. Billboard reports that the album sold 108,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 3 with 98,000 of those being pure album sales.

The success of The 1975 means Adele slips one place to Number Two while Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ is at Number Three. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ ‘This Unruly Mess I’ve Made’ debuted at Number Four having sold 61,000 units (51,000 pure album sales).

The group have performed live twice on US TV in recent months, appearing first on Saturday Night Live and then on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.

Matt Healy of The 1975 recently told NME he believes “the world needs” the band’s new album.

The frontman admits that the ambitious nature of the band’s new album could prove a stumbling block but that he couldn’t have made the album any other way. “I’m challenging people to sit through an hour and 15 minutes and 17 songs that all sound completely different from each other,” he admits. “It’s quite an emotional investment. It’s art. It’s what I want to do. The world needs this album.”
