Scottish tabloid claims that prison visit shows band condoning drugs...

THE CHARLATANS have branded claims by a tabloid paper that they were encouraging their fans to take drugs by visiting a convicted Ecstasy dealer in prison as ludicrous.

On October 23, the Scottish Sun published a photo showing band members Brookes, Blunt and Collins leaving Shotts Prison in Lanarkshire after visiting an unnamed acquaintance serving ten years for dealing the drug.

The paper quoted one prison officer as saying: “These guys just swanned in and chatted away to a known dealer. What message does that send out to young fans?”

But Charlatans manager Steve Harrison said: “They’re not trying to send out a message to anyone, they were just visiting an associate who used to work with them doing security.

“If it wasn’t in the press in the first place, no-one would have known they’d been.”
