Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham quotes Courteeners lyrics on Twitter

The Shadow Health Secretary took to social media to declare his love for the Manchester band

Labour Party politician Andy Burnham has taken to Twitter to quote lyrics by Manchester band The Courteeners.

Liverpool-born Burnham, who recently declared his intention to run in the Labour leadership contest following the resignation of Ed Miliband following the general election, recited words from the group’s 2010 single ‘Take Over The World’, lifted from their second album ‘Falcon’.

The Shadow Health Secretary wrote, “I’m only a paperboy from the North West. But I can scrub up well in my Sunday best,” before adding that he “loves” the band. See that tweet below.

It was recently announced that Peace will support The Courteeners at their sold-out Manchester gig at Heaton Park this summer.

The Courteeners’ hometown show, which was announced last November, sold out in less than an hour and is the first time a band has headlined the 20,000-capacity venue since The Stone Roses’ reunion shows in 2012. Alongside Peace, fellow support acts Bipolar Sunshine and Blossoms will play the June 5 gig.

The Courteeners’ fourth album ‘Concrete Love’ was released in August 2014, following on from 2008’s ‘St Jude’, 2010’s ‘Falcon’ and 2013’s ‘Anna’. Read the NME review of ‘Concrete Love’.
