SCALA CHAMELEONS

Ian Astbury's fairly ludicrous scheme also involves Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan. Just say no, chaps...

THE CULT‘s frontman IAN ASTBURY has said he would like to form a “gothic rock opera” version of the three tenors.

Speaking to www.cdnow.com from Illinois on their US tour, Astbury said: “When I’ve finished with this iconoclastic rock superheroes stuff, or whatever it is that we do, I want to get into opera. I want to sing at La Scala.

“I have a big fancy about moving to Milan and basically hard-schooling it for 16 hours a day and learning how to sing opera. Then it won’t be the three tenors any more. It would be me, [Nine Inch Nails frontman] Trent Reznor and [Tool‘s] Maynard James Keenan. I’d like to propose that to them: ‘Fuck these old fatty Italian blokes. When we’re all old and fat, that can be us.'”

According to the report, when asked if he was serious, he added: “Oh yeah. Gothic rock operas. That would be incredible.”

The Cult release their new album, ‘Beyond Good And Evil’, on June 4 in the UK (the following day in the US).

In addition, the band, currently in the midst of an extensive US tour, have UK appearances lined up at Reading and Leeds Carling Weekend Festivals as well as Glasgow Gig On The Green on the August bank holiday weekend (August 24 – 26).
