Black paint and blown-up amps on first night

The Fratellis had an explosive start on the opening night of the O2 NME Rock’n’Roll Riot Tour 2006, at Leeds University last night (October 10).

With the crowd chanting the riff to ’Chelsea Dagger’ before they took the stage, the band were in high spirits, playing most of their debut ’Costello Music’ including singles ’Creeping Up The Backstairs’ and ’Henrietta’.

However disaster almost struck one song in when one of the band’s amp exploded during opener ‘Creepin’ Up The Backstairs’ causing a brief pause.

Despite the break, the energy amongst the crowd remained high and when the gig got going again The Fratellis made up for lost time sending fans into a frenzy.

“The crowd really loved it,” frontman Jon Fratelli told NME.COM afterwards, “and that’s what mattered!”

The Fratellis played:

‘Creepin’ Up The Backstairs’

‘Cigarello’

‘Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night’

‘Flathead’

‘Vince The Loveable Stoner’

‘Doginabag’

‘Dirty Barry Stole The Thunder’

‘Ole Black ‘n’ Blue Eyes’

‘Lay Down’

‘Nina’

‘Baby Fratelli’

‘Whistle For The Choir’

‘Henrietta’

‘Hippy’

‘For The Girl’

‘Cuntry Boys And City Girls’

Earlier The Horrors played a frenetic set including the likes of ’Sheena Is A Parasite’ and forthcoming single ’Count In Fives’.

Meanwhile frontman Faris Rotter ensured the band left their dark mark on the crowd, showering the front rows in black paint to create a suitably gothic feel.

Brighton-based five-piece, The Maccabees stormed their appearence, with the likes of ’Lego’, ’Latchemere’ and ’X Ray’.

While Glasgow newcomers The Dykeenies overcame any possible nerves of playing their biggest gig to date, with an assured performance.

Introducing themselves to the audience, they showcased their synth pop, with tracks including single ’New Ideas’ and ’Will It Happen Tonight’.
