The Killers’ Brandon Flowers covers Elvis at low-key ‘Flamingo’ gig

Singer brings his solo album to the UK

Brandon Flowers played his first solo gig since the release of his solo album in London last night (September 8).

The Killers‘ frontman played a rare low-key show at the Garage to showcase ‘Flamingo’, which came out this week, and also included two Killers favourites and an Elvis Presley cover.

“You know how to make a boy feel good,” Flowers told the crowd, which included I Am ArrowsAndy Burrows and Mark Ronson, as he kicked off the show. “This is the first time we’ve played since the record came out, and we’re excited that you’re more familiar with the songs!”

Mainly sticking to ‘Flamingo’ songs, save for a synthed-up snatch of ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’, made famous by Elvis Presley, and Kim Carnes‘Bette Davis Eyes’, Flowers explained to the audience, who had entered a ballot to attend the gig, that his solo album may surprise them.

“I’m not afraid to say it, the album is a little more mild than what you’re used to,” he cautioned, “but there’s one song that is like that [The Killers‘ material], perhaps a little more to your tastes, it’s called ‘Jilted Lovers And Broken Hearts’.”

Flowers and his backing band, New Yorkers Ambulance Ltd, then tore into the song, with the audience singing along to every word despite the album only being available for three days.

After more songs from ‘Flamingo’, Flowers left the stage briefly, but gave a nod to his day job as he returned to play a stripped-down acoustic version of The Killers‘When You Were Young’, before thanking fans and leaving the stage for the final time.

Brandon Flowers played:

‘On The Floor’
‘Bette Davis Eyes’
‘Jilted Lovers And Broken Hearts’
‘Was It Something I Said’
‘Hard Enough’
‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’
‘Losing Touch’
‘Only The Young’
‘Swallow It’
‘Playing With Fire’
‘When You Were Young’

Brandon Flowers is expected to knock Katy Perry off the top of the UK album chart with ‘Flamingo’ this Sunday (12).
