Las Vegas group played 19-song set at intimate O2 Academy gig
The Killers played a warm-up gig in Liverpool last night (August 15) ahead of their V Festival headline shows this weekend.
The Las Vegas group played a 19-song set to a relatively intimate crowd of just over 1,200 in the city’s O2 Academy. “To play arenas and then to come and play venues like these… let’s see how it goes,” said frontman Brandon Flowers, after an opening duo of ‘Under The Gun’ and ‘Spaceman’.
Wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, Flowers added: “What’s up Scousers? We’re a band called The Killers from a place called Las Vegas,” before launching into the first crowd-pleaser of the night, ‘Smile Like You Mean It’.
Stalking the stage, Flowers riled the crowd up during ‘Miss Atomic Bomb’ and ‘Human’, which had the audience singing the chorus. An epic, slow-burning version of ‘Somebody Told Me’ then followed. Scroll down to watch fan-shot footage of the performance.
The band also performed a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Bad Mood Rising’.
“This might be the best crowd we’ve ever played to,” said Flowers shortly after. The band then went on to play ‘Reasons Unknown’, ‘Read My Mind’ and ‘Runaways’.
A tale from Flowers about how he first met guitarist Dave Keuning then turned into ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’, which had the whole crowd singing “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” into the break before the encore.
There were chants for the band to return for “two more songs” and when they did come back onstage they treated the enthusiastic crowd to a further four tracks, including ‘When You Were Young’ and a set-closing ‘Mr. Brightside’.
Acknowledging the lack of new material played tonight, drummer Ronnie Vannucci told the crowd: “You’re not ready for it now, but you kids are gonna love it.” Despite no new songs, the band still exited the stage to huge cheers.
