The reformed band will play the 60,000 capacity show today (July 5)

Pete Doherty has joked that he’ll get “good looking birds” to perform as a Libertines tribute act called The Lib-bunnies at the band’s Hyde Park show later today (July 5).

Speaking to NME, Doherty – with tongue firmly in cheek – discussed his guestlist woes ahead of tonight’s gig. “They’re being so tight with the guestlist!” he commented. “So what I’m thinking of doing to help all the good looking birds I know get in – the ones I can’t justify putting on the guestlist, mainly because my girlfriend is looking after it – is maybe getting them to dress up in red jackets and fishnets to form some sort of Libertines tribute act. The Lib-bunnies, we’ll call them! Then if that happens maybe we can have them cavorting around onstage a bit during the drum break in ‘The Good Old Days’. I’m trying to get it together but we haven’t got long!”

Doherty added that he’s not nervous about the gig. “Not really – which isn’t like me. I’m normally all over the place,” he stated. Carl Barat however said “the pressure is on”. “I was a little bit in disbelief [at how many tickets the band have shifted]. I mean, it’s sold out pretty much. It makes me happy but it also means the pressure is on,” he told NME.

The group will headline the 60,000 capacity London park as part of the Barclaycard British Summer Time series. Last weekend (June 28), The Libertines reunited to play their first gig together in four years, taking to the stage at Glasgow Barrowland to play a 25-song set as a warm-up.

Make sure you pick up next week’s issue of NME, out July 9 on newsstands and available digitally, for an exclusive interview with The Libertines talking about what the future holds for the band, plus the definitive verdict on their comeback shows.

After Hyde Park, The Libertines headline Benicassim festival on July 19, before going on their first tour of mainland Europe since 2004 in September.

The Libertines will play:

London Hyde Park British Summertime (July 5)
Lisbon Optimus Alive festival (12)
Benicàssim Festival (19)
Paris Zenith (September 30)
Amsterdam Heineken Music Hall (October 2)
Brussels FN Club (3)
