The National reveal ‘The Hunger Games’ soundtrack song ‘Lean’

US band were forced to change the title of the song as original was deemed "too dark"

The National have revealed new song ‘Lean’, their contribution to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. Scroll down to hear the song now.

The official soundtrack will be released on November 19 and also features the brand new Coldplay song ‘Atlas’. Other artists to have contributed songs include Patti Smith, Lorde, The Lumineers, Ellie Goulding, Christina Aguilera, The Weeknd and Santigold.

Speaking to NME recently, The National’s frontman Matt Berninger revealed that his band’s contribution to the soundtrack was originally deemed “too dark” by the film’s makers – because of its title. The group originally contributed a song called ‘Dying Is Easy’, but it was sent back so the band were forced to change its name to ‘Lean’.

“The song almost didn’t make it because it was too dark for The Hunger Games soundtrack, which I thought was sort of funny because it’s about killing kids, I don’t know how a song can be darker than that?” he said. “So we had to change the name of the song; I actually like the name ‘Lean’.”

He added: “The song was originally called ‘Dying Is Easy’ and I think that they thought it was a little too dark. But, you know, I get it. It was a really fun project… It was a cool change from how we normally work on things – to write something for something else. It was kind of a pressure release thing and it was fun, we really enjoyed it.”
