The Orwells apologise to Arctic Monkeys onstage at tiny London gig

The Chicago band had made comments about the Monkeys' "synchronised" stage show

The Orwells apologised to Arctic Monkeys on stage at an intimate London gig last night (April 16).

The group, who supported the Sheffield band on their US arena tour earlier this year, had commented earlier in the week on their “synchronised” performance and the lack of variety over the course of the tour.

During a headline show at east London pop-up venue The Pavilion, frontman Mario Cuomo joked about the furor over the band’s words, announcing: “That’s from our new album, ‘AM'”. He then added: “We would never slag off the biggest band in England right now.”

Watched by just 170 people, the Chicago band previewed tracks like ‘Southern Comfort’, ‘Gotta Get Down’ and ‘The Righteous One’ from their forthcoming second album ‘Disgraceland’. They also played a handful of songs from their 2012 debut ‘Remember When’ and covers, including The Foundations’ ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, The Stooges’ ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’, Black Lips’ ‘Not A Problem’ and Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood’. Cuomo declared after the latter: “Blur and Oasis ain’t shit compared to the Gorillaz” after the latter.

The Orwells’ hour-long set was halted a couple of times due to issues with guitarist Dominic Corso’s pedals. When they failed for a second time during ‘Other Voices’, he threw his guitar on the floor and jumped off stage to dance with the crowd as the rest of the band continued playing.

The band later finished the show with recent single ‘Who Needs You’, during which Cuomo leapt onto the audience before clambering back over the barrier, with one shoe missing.

The Orwells’ ‘Disgraceland’ will be released on June 2 via Canvasback/Atlantic. The band will return to the UK around its release. They will play:

Liverpool East Village Arts Club (June 2)
Edinburgh Electric Circus (3)
Nottingham Rescue Rooms (4)
London Dingwalls (5)
Manchester Gorilla (6)
