Ronnie Wood beats Jarvis Cocker to Sony Radio Academy Award

Absolute Radio presenter scoops honour at London ceremony

The Rolling StonesRonnie Wood beat nominee Jarvis Cocker to the Music Radio Personality Of The Year honour at the Sony Radio Academy Awards last night (May 9).

The guitarist-turned-presenter appears on Absolute Radio, while Pulp frontman Cocker presents on BBC 6music. Chris Moyles, Frank Skinner and Scott Mills were also nominated in the category.

Wood was praised for his “amazing character”. The judges added: “Ronnie has lived the life of a thousand men and you feel like a child sitting at his feet as he unfolds his rarefied story book and recounts his great adventures. His use of his guitar and harmonica to introduce the varied music and stories make this a unique and award winning show.”

The awards were handed out at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, with Chris Evans hosting the bash. Wood was also nominated for the Rising Star Award but lost out to footballer Robbie Savage, who appears on BBC Radio 5 live.

BBC Radio 2‘s Simon Mayo Drivetime was named Best Music Programme, with Geoff Lloyd’s Hometime Show, which is on Absolute Radio, the runner up. See Radiowards.org for the full list of winners.
