The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue: ‘how I messed up Paul McCartney support slot’

Singer recalls being deeply embarrassed by on-stage mistake

The Voice coach Danny O’Donoghue has revealed that he once embarrassed himself when supporting Paul McCartney with his band The Script.

O’Donoghue, who can currently be seen on the second series of the BBC1 talent show alongside fellow coaches Tom Jones, Jessie J and will.i.am, opened for McCartney during a US tour four years ago. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Irish frontman revealed that he accidentally pressed the wrong button on his keyboard and shamed himself in front of thousands of people.

“We performed at Shea Stadium in New York in 2009, supporting Sir Paul McCartney,” he said. Adding: “I was introducing each band member as they played a solo, and when it came to my turn, I was supposed to play a piano riff on the keyboard but I hit the wrong button and it came out as drums. It sounded rubbish. In front of 50,000 people and a Beatle! That was bad.”
