Tabloid reports suggest that Mel C has quit the band...

Mystery surrounds the future of the SPICE GIRLS this morning (March 9), after reports that MEL C has quit the band.

According to news agency Reuters, Mel said she has no plans to go back to the band, and quotes her as saying: “I’ll always be a Spice Girl, but I don’t intend to do any more work with the Spice Girls. Really, I’ve not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for probably the last two years… We’re still linked business-wise and we’re still friends, but I don’t consider myself to work as [part of] a band now.”

However, spokespeople for Mel and the Spice Girls were denying a split – despite papers like The Sun proclaiming that the band were finished.

A spokesman was reported as saying: “Mel C hasn’t quit the band. They’re taking a break, but nothing’s final. They’re working on solo projects.”

Speculation about the band’s future has been rife since their last album, ‘Forever’, failed to go to Number One, instead going in at Number Two behind Westlife. It plummeted out of the Top 40 weeks later.

The band also shelved plans to release a third single from the album, despite the fact that the previous two singles from it, ‘Holler’ and ‘Goodbye’, had gone to Number One. Record label Virgin stopped promoting the album at Christmas.
