The Stone Roses perform first New Zealand gig in 17 years

Band appear at Vector Arena for first date since 1996

The Stone Roses performed their first gig in New Zealand for 17 years last night (February 26).

The band were down under for a performance at the Future Music Festival in Brisbane, Australia and played the warm up show at New Zealand’s 10,000 capacity Vector Arena venue. The Stone Roses opened with ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and went on to play a 15-minute version of ‘Fools Gold’ before closing their set with ‘I Am The Resurrection’. The New Zealand Herald reports that ‘Waterfall’ had to be started three times with Ian Brown “giving poor old Mani a telling off”.

Earlier this year, it was announced that The Roses will be headlining the opening night of Coachella along with Blur. The line-up for the California festival, which takes place over two weekends in April (12-14 April and 19-21 April), was announced in January. However, some US fans were left bemused by the announcement that the Madchester legends were headlining the bash – leading to the creation of a Tumblr blog, called Who Are The Stone Roses?.

Also performing on the Friday of the festival will be Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Johnny Marr, Lou Reed, Modest Mouse and Jake Bugg. Phoenix will be the festival’s second headliner, appearing on a bill which also includes The xx, Postal Service, Sigur Ros, New Order, Hot Chip, Grizzly Bear, Two Door Cinema Club, Biffy Clyro, Foals and Franz Ferdinand.

The third and final Coachella headliner for 2013 will be Red Hot Chili Peppers. The veteran rockers will close the festival on both weekends, topping a bill which also includes Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Vampire Weekend, Jessie Ware, Tame Impala, James Blake and Grimes.
