The Weeknd says he’s ‘boring’ in first ever interview

Singer Abel Tesfaye reveals that his new album will be "like a horror movie"

The Weeknd has been interviewed for the first time ever – and in it has said he thinks he’s ‘boring’.

Speaking to Complex magazine – via hotnewhiphop.com – the singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, said that he had steered clear of interviews in the past because: “I felt like I had nothing to say. I still feel I have nothing to say. I’m the most boring person to talk to.”

When asked if the air of mystery surrounding him was intentional, Tesfaye replied: “Yes and no. In the beginning, I was very insecure. I hated how I looked in pictures. I just fucking hated this shit, like, crop me out of this picture right now. I was very camera shy. People like hot girls, so I put my music to hot girls and it just became a trend. The whole ‘enigmatic artist’ thing, I just ran with it. No one could find pictures of me. It reminded me of some villain shit. But you can’t escape the Internet.”

Speaking about his forthcoming new album, ‘Kiss Land’, Tesfaye compared the record to a horror movie, saying: “A lot of it is inspired by filmmakers like John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, and Ridley Scott, because they know how to capture fear. That’s what ‘Kiss Land’ is to me, an environment that’s just honest fear. I don’t know who I am right now and I’m doing all these outlandish things in these settings that I’m not familiar with. To me, it’s the most terrifying thing ever. So when you hear the screams in the record and you hear all these horror references and you feel scared, listen to the music because I want you to feel what I’m feeling. ‘Kiss Land’ is like a horror movie.”

The ‘Kiss Land’ LP will be The Weeknd’s proper studio follow-up to his mixtape trilogy and is due for release on August 26. The album was teased back in January when he posted a picture a picture of his computer desktop, which featured a folder named ‘2013 untitled album’. He then followed it up with a tweet, writing: “If you thought my shit knocked before… 2013.”

The R&B singer will play three UK dates in November.

The Weeknd will play:

Birmingham NIA (November 22)
Manchester O2 Apollo (23)
London O2 Arena (26)
