The White Stripes score biggest-selling vinyl single

'Icky Thump' sets record after NME seven-inch giveaway

The White Stripes have scored the biggest-selling vinyl single in the UK with ’Icky Thump’.

The track which went in at Number Two in yesterday’s (June 17) chart managed to break the 10,000 sales barrier for the seven-inch version of the single in just two days last week (June 11-16).

According to Music Week, Wet Wet Wet’s ’Love Is All Around’ was the last single to sell more than 50,000 vinyl singles, but that was over 15 weeks, and only sold 4,770 seven-inches in its biggest sales week.

The success of the single has been partly credited to the band’s decision to give away a free companion seven-inch single ’Rag And Bone’ with issues of NME earlier in the month.

’Rag And Bone’ was given away on red vinyl and came with packaging that left space for the white seven-inch of ’Icky Thump’

“With this collaboration with NME, we felt that it could work on one or two levels,” explained XL Recordings chairman and CEO Richard Russell. “It gives consumers something amazing and it has the attention to detail that The White Stripes always apply to everything they do.”
