Dave Grohl taps Gaz Coombes after falling ill
Grohl fell ill over the weekend and tapped their current tour-mates to step in at the event, which also featured performances of The Who songs by Pearl Jam, the Flaming Lips and the remaining members of The Who.
Supergrass received a police escort from one end of Los Angeles to the other and back again so they could make it back to Hollywood in time for their headlining gig at the Avalon later that night.
“It’s quite exciting that Gaz was asked to cover for Dave Grohl,” Supergrass keyboardist and Gaz’s brother Rob Coombes told NME.COM. “It’s not what we were expecting but it’s pretty cool — it’s nice for Gaz to be asked.”
Several bands and celebrities including Sean Penn and Adam Sandler honoured The Who at the taping of the VH1 Rock Honors programme, which is due to air Thursday (July 17) on the cable network.
Proceeds from the event will benefit several charities including The Teenage Cancer Trust and The Who‘s Double O Charity.
