Solange and Dev Hynes host listening party at The xx’s LA exhibition space

Attendees included former Destiny’s Child vocalist Kelly Rowland and Cerebal Ballzy frontman Honor Titus

Solange Knowles and Devonte Hynes hosted a listening party for Knowles’ new EP ‘True’ last night (November 27) in Los Angeles.

The event took place at Sonos Studio in Hollywood, where The xx are also currently putting on an art installation called Missing. An interactive exhibit inspired by the London trio’s new album, ‘Coexist’, The xx’s installation features 50 robotic music players which follow the movement of visitors.

Knowles and Blood Orange/Lightspeed Champion man Hynes – who produced and co-wrote her seven song EP – took over the space to play Knowles’ new EP to a crowd which included former Destiny’s Child vocalist Kelly Rowland and Cerebal Ballzy frontman Honor Titus.

After the listening session, Knowles and Hynes took part in a Q&A session in which they talked about how the unlikely collaboration came about. They met, they report, through a mutual friend named Theophilus London. “He said there [he had] a song that I have to hear and have to be a part of,” said Knowles, adding that the songs Hynes worked on with her for the EP were “really strong amazing pop songs… with layers and nuances.”

Explaining his songwriting process, Hynes added: “If I have a slight bit of hesitation with regards to showing it to family and friends, I get rid of it.”

The EP was released on Grizzly Bear man Chris Taylor’s indie label Terrible Records. Speaking about moving from a major label – Knowles used to be signed to Interscope – to an indie, Knowles admitted: “This has just been such an enjoyable process… The goal here was getting the music out and making it the most easiest and enjoyable experience… In terms of releasing the music it has been a tremendous contrast.”

She added that Hynes, who used to play with Test Icicles, “has become such an amazing friend to me”, before saying that ‘True’ will not be the only collaborative project the par work on together.

Knowles is set to release her third studio album next year.
