Tom Grennan reveals tear-inducingly awkward encounter with “hero” Alex Turner

"I did cry after"

Tom Grennan has revealed that he once had a really awkward encounter with Arctic Monkeys‘ frontman Alex Turner – so much so, that the wept afterwards.

The rising solo artist, picked as one of the NME 100 most essential new bands to keep an eye on this year, was speaking to Radio X when he revealed how he became starstruck during the unfortunate toilet encounter.

“I was in Holland and I was playing a festival,” said Grennan. “And our dressing room was next door to The Last Shadow Puppets. Alex Turner is a hero of mine, so I was like, wow. He walked in and he looked like Elvis Presley to me, man!”

Grennan continued” “And I went to the toilet and had a wee and who walks in and has a wee next to me, but Alex Turner? So I was like, I’ve got to say something here and not bottle it… and I’ve got to be cool about it, too.

“So he’s having a pee… I’m having a pee… I look at him, he looks at me. He nods the head and all I could say was… ‘I’m a massive fan, man’. BOOM – pull the trousers up, and gone… just gone. I walked out and thought, I’ve just bottled it, I’ve just blown the whole Alex Turner experience.

He added: “I did cry after. And Alex Turner probably thinks I’m a right bottle job.”

Speaking of heroes, last week saw Grennan tell NME about his ambitions for his debut album and hopes of meeting Liam Gallagher.

“I want a number one album, man – 100%. If I’m being truthful with you, I do think about that,” he said. “I won’t be disappointed if I don’t get one, well I probably will, but my aim is to just have longevity and make good music.”

Singing the praises of the evening’s Godlike Genius recipient Liam Gallagher, Grennan added that he was not only hoping to meet him, but was “100%” game for a collaboration.

“That’s my plan, man,” laughed Grennan. “I reckon Liam Gallagher will love me as well. Liam, if you’re watching – oi oi.”

In Arctic Monkeys news, after announcing a string of world tour dates in anticipation for their upcoming new album, the band are also rumoured to be performing a series of huge homecoming gigs at Hillsborough Park in their native Sheffield.
