Bono hitches lift with professional ice hockey player and rewards him with free tickets

U2 frontman gives NHL pro Gilbert Brule and his girlfriend backstage passes after they rescue him from the rain

Bono gave a professional ice hockey player and his girlfriend free tickets to a U2 show in Canada earlier this week after they picked him up when he was hitchhiking.

According to The Edmonton Journal, the singer and his assistant had been left stranded in the rain near the West Vancouver Yacht Club after going for a walk when Gilbert Brule – who plays for the NHL side The Edmonton Oilers – and his girlfriend Kelsey Nichols offered to give them a ride. To show his gratitude, Bono invited them to the band’s show at the city’s Commonwealth Stadium on June 1.

At the gig, Bono told the crowd: “I like ice hockey because people who play ice hockey are the kind of people who pick up hitchhikers. I’m ever so grateful. I’ve decided that I want to be Gilbert Brule.”

Brule and Nichols were also given backstage passes signed by Bono with the messages “Thanks for the ride” and “My hero Gilbert“. Nichols told The Edmonton Journal: “I didn’t want to stop, but they waved and G [Brule] yelled ‘that’s Bono. I didn’t believe him so I kept driving”. Brule added: “We go to walk our dog and Bono ends up in our car.”

U2 are set to headline this year’s Glastonbury festival, and have promised that their set at Worthy Farm will be like “Glastonbury on steroids”. The band are set to play this year’s festival after having had to cancel their appearance last year following Bono’s back surgery.
