The Killers bring first night of V Festival to an emotional close

The Las Vegas band 'kiss 'Sam's Town' goodbye' at Weston Park

The Killers have brought the first night of V Festival 2007 to a close at Staffords Weston Park tonight (August 18).

Speaking to NME.COM ahead of their set, frontman Brandon Flowers admitted that the weekend’s shows will be among their last in the UK for some time.

“With V Festival and a show we’re doing in Belfast we’re kissing ‘Sam’s Town’ goodbye here,” he said. “I’m a sentimental person, some people won’t believe me but I am, so it’s sad. It’s no secret that the UK is special place for us. But hopefully it will be a celebration too. After that we’re off to do album number three.”

Explaining it had been an eventful summer of festivals for his band, the first that’s saw them headline – with slots at Glastonbury and T In The Park as well as these shows – the singer declared The Killers had enjoyed themselves.

“I think T In The Park is the best gig we’ve played in our life, ever,” he stated. “That hasn’t been said. We’ve over hyped Glastonbury and then with the terrible sound but we left it all there and at T the best came out. It’s definitely the best so far.”

Taking the stage The Killers certainly appeared to be doing their best to top the Scottish festival, and after Kasabian‘s performance before them, the Las Vegas band knew they had a high standard to live up to.

“I heard Serge from Kasabian said he wanted to blow us in the nicest possible way, I like that,” said Flowers. “If I was in his band I’d want to be better than us, but I think we’ve got a decent arsenal with the two albums we’ve got.”

Kicking off with the track ‘Sam’s Town’ itself, there were no sound problems this time as the band cruised through a series of songs from both their recent album and 2004 debut ‘Hot Fuss’.

However while they shined with the likes of ‘Somebody Told Me’, ‘Uncle Jonny’ and ‘Mr Brightside’ the band’s encore really thrilled the audience.

Firstly they included their Joy Division cover ‘Shadowplay’, which resonated emotionally following the death of Factory Records legend Tony Wilson last week (August 10).

After that the band built the crowd into a frenzy with ‘For Reasons Unknown’, before ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’ provided the biggest singalong of the day.

The Killers played:

‘Sam’s Town’

‘Enterlude’

‘When You Were Young’

‘Bones’

‘Somebody Told Me’

‘Smile Like You Mean It’

‘Uncle Jonny’

‘Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine’

‘The River Is Wild’
