Damon Albarn and giant crowd watch Vampire Weekend at Glastonbury

Danger Mouse is also side of stage as New Yorkers proved big draw on festival's first day

Vampire Weekend were watched by Damon Albarn and around 40,000 fans as they played Glastonbury‘s Pyramid Stage this evening (June 25).

The Blur man, who headlines tonight with Gorillaz, watched from the wings along with the likes of Danger Mouse as the New Yorkers got the crowd dancing in the sun.

Playing in front of a giant version of the ‘Contra album cover – complete with eyes that lit up throughout the set – the band played a set drawn from their two albums.

The set also saw drummer Chris Tomson celebrate the USA making it into the last 16 of the World Cup, by reprising the stars and stripes vest he wore at the Isle Of Wight Festival when his country drew with England in the group stage.

Later, keyboard player Rostam Batmanglij invited the crowd to join in the Lion King-like refrain of ‘Horchata’, and finding Glastonbury in good voice, frontman Ezra Koenig then encouraged them to “take a deep breath” and join in again on ‘Mansard Roof’.

“You’ve been amazing,” the singer told the crowd as the band finished with regular closer ‘Walcott’.

Vampire Weekend played:

‘White Sky’
‘Holiday’
‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’
‘I Stand Corrected’
‘M79’
‘California English’
‘Cousins’
‘Run’
‘A-Punk’
‘One’
‘Giving Up The Gun’
‘Campus’
‘Oxford Comma’
‘Horchata’
‘Mansard Roof’
‘Walcott’
