‘The Office’ actor Ed Helms to release debut album with band The Lonesome Trio

Self-titled LP out June 16

Fans of US sitcom The Office and The Hangover movie trilogy will be familiar with the musicianship of Ed Helms, who is well known for his comedic vocal stylings and nimble banjo skills.

Now the actor is dedicating himself to music full-time with his band The Lonesome Trio, who, as reported by Rolling Stone, are set to release their self-titled debut album for June 16 via Sugar Hill Records.

The group – which consists of Helms (vocals and guitar), Ian Riggs (bass) and Jacob Tilovemet (madoline) – have actually been playing music together for over two decades, coming together while attending Oberlin College in Ohio. They recently spent two weeks recording the 12 original songs that will form their forthcoming album at Echo Mountain studios in Asheville, North Carolina.

“We decided right out of the gate that the three of us needed to do the whole thing,” Helms told Rolling Stone. “But we opened the door to lots of additional instruments and layers. The only rule was that we do it ourselves. I’m proud of that. It was more important than any crisp perfection in the execution and I just love it. That’s our spirit. There is no sound on that album that didn’t come from the three of us.”

Helms played Andy Bernard on The Office from 2006 to 2013. Prior to that he was best known as a correspondent on The Daily Show.
