Famous names sign a new petition supporting the re-election of Lucas in Brighton Pavilion
Several big-name musicians have signed a new petition supporting the re-election of British Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.
Lucas has been the Greens’ representative for Brighton Pavilion since 2010, having previously served as a MEP and leader for the party. Lucas will stand for re-election at the upcoming General Election on May 7.
A joint statement has been signed by 40 backers in total, with the likes of Sir David Attenborough, Lily Cole, Joanna Lumley, Bianca Jagger, Alistair McGowan and Jeremy Irons also among the names.
“Over the last five years Caroline has eloquently addressed many of today’s most pressing issues – from accelerating climate change to sustainable farming, from human rights to a just and sustainable economy,” the statement reads. “This leadership matters all the more at a time when the mainstream parties are finding it so hard to address these challenges properly.”
“Regardless of our own political allegiance, we believe that our democracy can only be strengthened by maintaining such a strong and inspirational presence in Parliament.”
Thom Yorke recently accused the UK government of “staggering hypocrisy” over tax avoidance in a British documentary called The UK Gold. The film, which explores the history of tax avoidance, is directed by Mark Donne and narrated by actor Dominic West.
“For all the current governments talk of standards in the Financial Industry it comes as no surprise perhaps that the reality beneath reveals their staggering hypocrisy,” Yorke says in the film.
He continues: “Now is the time to reveal the revolving doors between government and the City that has bred lies and corruption for so long, siphoning money through our tax havens for the global super rich, while now preaching that we the people must pay our taxes and suffer austerity. Just who does our government work for?”
