T In The Park man who claimed he was stuck in tent bag as festival ended admits he was joking

Scottish police were alerted to Scott Johnston's tweet as message went viral

The T In The Park festival goer who alerted the attention of police after claiming he was trapped in a tent bag has admitted his call for help was a prank.

Scott Johnston, 23, sent a tweet to the festival’s official account claiming “Someone has packed me into a tent bag for a joke and I can’t get out”. He added that his battery was running low. The tweet was shared over eight thousand times across social media.

Police Scotland replied to the tweet and tried to contact Johnston to see if he was OK. However, speaking to the Daily Record, Johnston admitted that he sent the tweet as a joke and that he actually left the festival the day before.

“It is everywhere online… I just tweeted it for a laugh. I didn’t think it would spiral out of control,” he said of the now deleted tweet.

He continued: “I barely use Twitter. That’s probably the first tweet I’ve sent in ages. I don’t feel bad about it. I can’t stop laughing – it’s the only thing that made me laugh all weekend. That was my seventh year going and it was the worst T In The Park I’ve ever been to. I actually left earlier on Sunday morning, I wasn’t even there this morning.”

Meanwhile, police have also confirmed the death of a 36 year-old man found at the festival’s campsite on Saturday afternoon (July 11).

A spokesman for the festival said: “We are extremely saddened by this news, and our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

Police are appealing for information regarding the incident. 25 arrests have been made at the festival, unrelated to the man’s death.
