Burzum’s Varg Vikernes arrested for ‘plotting massacre’ in France

Police were alerted after the frontman revealed links with Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik

Burzum frontman Varg Vikernes has been arrested in France and accused of plotting a massacre.

Newspaper reports claim that the singer in the black metal group was arrested this morning (July 16) at his farm in Salon-la Tour in central France, where he lives with his wife and three children. Le Monde states that the property is currently being searched for weapons and explosives. The arrest was made by the French government’s Central Directorate of Internal Intelligence, which revealed to the media that it suspects Vikernes of “plotting a massacre”.

French radio station RTL is also reporting that Vikernes’s wife is a member of a shooting club and recently purchased four legal rifles. Reuters report adds that police were alerted to the singer’s activity after he revealed that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik sent a copy of a manifesto setting out his ideology to Vikernes. “That was at the origin of the investigation… There were several suspicions that made the services fear he could possibly carry out a violent act,” a police spokesperson said.

Vikernes, a self-confessed Neo-Nazi sympathiser, has previously spent 21 years in prison in Norway for the murder of Øystein Aarseth, known as Euronymous, guitarist of black metal band Mayhem.

Vikernes was released in 2009 but was convicted of four counts of arson on churches in the same year.
