Singer responds to sexist tweet posted in September
Hannah Reid of London Grammar has spoken about the sexist tweet about her sent by BBC Radio 1 earlier this year for the first time.
In September, Radio 1 were forced to apologise for a tweet sent from the account of Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show which asked listeners if they thought Reid was “fit”.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, staff from the station’s Breakfast Show posted a picture of the trio alongside the comment: “We all think that the girl from @londongrammar is fit. Let us know if you agree on 81199 #ladz”. After receiving a number of complaints, they wrote an apology, saying it was meant to be ‘ironic’: “Our tweet earlier about Hannah from @londongrammar was meant to be ironic, but we got it wrong. We’re sorry.”
Speaking to The Observer, Reid was critical of the situation and discussed how it highlights the everyday sexism that many female artists face in the music industry. “I think it’s the first thing that’s happened where I felt out of control,” she said. “I think they could have said much worse and more sexist things, but asking people to text in if they agree… Putting my looks up for debate was wrong. And it’s just how casual it was. It does say something about casual sexism.”
London Grammar will tour the UK in February next year.
