Jon Morter slams the corporation
Jon Morter, the man behind campaigns to get Rage Against The Machine and the Hillsborough charity single to Number One, has said that the BBC’s refusal to play ‘Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead’ in full shows “weakness”.
Morter played no part in the popularity of the single, recorded by Judy Garland for The Wizard Of Oz before being reappropriated following the death of Margaret Thatcher last week. However, he posted his thoughts on the single’s success on his Facebook page yesterday (April 14), writing that BBC Radio 1’s refusal to play the full version of the 51-second long song in favour of a shorter clip inside a news report on the chart campaign showed “weakness”.
“Quite an interesting chart week to say the least, in fact quite an interesting week full stop,” Morter wrote. “So the UK singles chart has had another ‘Pistols moment’ with a controversial song being stalled at Number Two despite selling 40 per cent more than the eventual Number One on the iTunes & Amazon charts for a few solid days. It’s caused debate and support/hatred all over the place, and has highlighted a few weaknesses at the BBC too. I actually believe it’ll spark even more debate and noise by actually being Number Two.”
Despite seeing a sales surge of more than 18,000 copies since Friday morning, the song finished over 5,700 copies behind Duke Dumont and A*M*E’s track ‘Need You (100%)’ in second place with a final sales tally of 52,605, according to the Official Charts Company.
