Megaupload’s Kim Dotcom reveals details of new music service

The tycoon stepped down from his latest Mega project earlier this week

Megaupload tycoon Kim Dotcom has revealed details of a new music service called Baboon.

Dotcom is currently residing in New Zealand awaiting court rulings which will determine if he will be extradited to the US to face a copyright battle over his site Megaupload, which was shut down by the US Department of Justice in January 2012.

In January 2013, he launched Megaupload’s successor Mega under the domain name mega.co.nz. However in a series of tweets earlier this week, he said that he was leaving his post at Mega to focus on his upcoming copyright battle and the political party in New Zealand he is setting up in advance of the country’s 2014 election.

Just days after giving up the post, Torrent Freak report that he has now announced that his new venture could be called Baboom and would offer a new music service that he has pitched to artists promising that they would have “more freedom, transparency and control”.

He also claims to have secured several million in funding for the project, which will give the public access to free music, compensating artists through advertising revenue. A paid-for version is also planned, giving fans the chance to listen to music ad-free for a fee.
