Actor was alone when he died and police have found no signs of foul play
Glee star Cory Monteith has died at the age of 31.
The actor, who played heartthrob Finn Hudson in the hit US series, was found dead in his room at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel at noon local time yesterday (July 13). Hotel staff entered his room after the actor had missed his check-out time.
Hotel security footage shows that Monteith returned to his hotel room alone in the early hours of Saturday morning, having been with other people on Friday night. Addressing reporters at a press conference, local coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed that police and paramedics found no signs of foul play. The cause of death was not immediately apparent, she said.
Monteith had a history of substance abuse and spent just under a month in a rehab facility earlier this year after voluntarily checking himself in on March 31. When asked by reporters if the actor died of a drug overdose, Doug LePard of the Vancouver Police Department said that he would “not discuss anything that we might have found in the room at this time”.
“We only notified family members about an hour ago, so we haven’t even been able to have those conversations with them,” LePard added. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow (July 15).
Monteith had played Finn Hudson on Glee since the show premiered in 2009, having previously made appearances in numerous US TV series including Smallville, Supernatural and Kyle XY.
A statement from the makers of Glee reads: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
Monteith was born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Canada to Ann, an interior decorator and Joe, a former member of the Canadian military. He is survived his parents and older brother, Shaun. He had been dating his Glee co-star Lea Michele before he died.
