MTV’s Video Music Awards dropped 1.8 million viewers this year, according to figures released following Sunday’s show.
The TV station’s flagship event featured a 20-minute performance from Beyonce, who was presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard honour by her husband Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy. Elsewhere in the show, artists including Taylor Swift, Usher and Nicky Minaj performed.
The show pulled in an average audience of 8.3 million viewers – down from 2013’s 10.1 million, the Hollywood Reporter says.
Despite this, in MTV’s target audience of 12 to 34-year-olds, the show averaged a 6.7 rating from audience measurement system Nielson. In addition, it garnered an estimated 12.6 million tweets.
The 2013 VMAs made huge gains in audience figures thanks to a move back to a Sunday night slot. When it took place on Thursday in 2012, viewing figures plummeted to 6.1 million.
The biggest audience the awards ceremony ever pulled in was in 2011, when it reached 12.4 million viewers.
Also on the night, Lorde became the first female artist to scoop the Best Rock Video prize, while Miley Cyrus won the Video Of The Year award for ‘Wrecking Ball’. Rather than taking to the stage herself, however, the singer instead asked homeless man Jesse Helt to accept the award on her behalf.
