Funk artist/rapper died after being shot on stage on Saturday night (July 6)

Brazilian rapper MC Daleste has died after being shot onstage at a gig on Saturday night (July 6).

The funk artist, real name Daniel Pellegrine, was performing at a show in the city of Campinas, near Sao Paulo, when he was shot in the abdomen by someone in the crowd. The 20-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead on Sunday (July 7).

A fan filmed the incident and has since uploaded it to YouTube. In the 90-second clip, Pellegrine can be seen onstage introducing the next song when he is hit with bullet fired from the crowd. The rapper then slumps to the ground while members of his crew come to his aid.

Fans have since swamped the rapper’s official Facebook page to post tributes. According to Billboard, an unnamed friend posted a statement calling Pellegrine a “victim of intolerance”. He added: “I hope God gives strength to the family, friends, and fans of my good friend MC Daleste, a guy who only wanted to convey joy to everyone through his music. It is a pity that the peace which we dream of, we often only get when we close our eyes.”

The Civil Police of Sao Paulo has issued a statement saying they have launched an investigation into the murder of Pellegrine, according to Brazilian reports. No arrests have been made so far.
