Music fans at SXSW tricked into praising fake bands by Jimmy Kimmel – watch

US chat show host gets opinions on fictional acts such as Willie Nelson Mandela from festivalgoers

Music fans at South By South West have been tricked into praising fake bands in a new comedy sketch by US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel. See above to watch the clip.

The host and comedian is currently in Austin, Texas where he has been presenting his show Jimmy Kimmel Live all week from the festival. Last night (March 14) saw Kimmel show a clip in which his camera crew went around Austin asking festival goers what they thought of fictional bands such as Willie Nelson Mandela and Contact Dermatitis with many not only claiming to know the acts, but offering opinions on their music.

As you can see in he clip above, Kimmel introduces the segment by saying. “People who come to music festivals pride themselves on knowing who the new acts are, even if they don’t actually know who they are. These are not real bands, we made them all up, but that didn’t stop people from telling us how much they liked them.”

Other fake acts people are asked about include DJ Cornmeal, I’m Not Done With This Salad and Vegan Bikini. Kimmel previously played a similar prank on fans at Coachella in 2013.

So far this year South By South West has already seen a performance in which Lady Gaga was spitroasted and vomited on as well as Jay Z and Kanye West reunite The Throne for a one-off performance. Elsewhere, Jarvis Cocker unveiled the new Pulp documentary while Neil Young announced plans for his Pono music service and Coldplay performed tracks from their new album ‘Ghost Stories’ while making their live return.
