Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2013 shortlist to be announced next week

The prestigious gong was last year awarded to Alt-J and their debut album 'An Awesome Wave'

The Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2013 shortlist is set to be announced on September 11.

The shortlist will be revealed by Lauren Laverne at The Hospital Club in London at 5.30pm [BST], with television coverage of the event to be broadcast the following night on Channel 4, hosted by Nick Grimshaw and featuring performances and interviews with some of the shortlisted artists.

The winner of the 2013 Barclaycard Mercury Prize Prize will be decided and announced at London’s Roundhouse on October 30. David Bowie‘s comeback album ‘The Next Day’ was an early favourite to win this year’s prize. The album, released in March, was Bowie’s first since ‘Reality’ in 2003 and was met with critical acclaim. Leading bookmaker Paddy Power slashed the odds on the album winning the prestigious prize from 12/1 to just 7/2, following a spate of bets. However, the current favourite is London Grammar, whose debut album ‘If You Wait’ has odds of 15/8, despite not being released until next week.

Other names bookies expect to see shortlisted for this year’s Mercury include Foals, Laura Marling and Steve Mason, who have winning odds of 4/1. Biffy Clyro, The Joy Formidable, Savages, King Krule and Everything Everything are also on the projected list of names for the shortlist.

Alt-J – pictured at the top of the page – won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize in 2012 when their album ‘An Awesome Wave’ was picked from a shortlist that included albums by Jessie Ware, Ben Howard, Django Django and The Maccabees.
