Military Wives take top spot from Bruce Springsteen in this week’s UK Albums Chart

'In My Dreams' overtakes Bruce Springsteen by nearly 8,000 copies

Military Wives have topped this week’s UK Albums Chart with their debut record ‘In My Dreams’, overtaking last week’s Number 1 release, Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘Wrecking Ball’ (which placed at Number 5 this week).

‘In My Dreams’ outranked ‘Wrecking Ball’ by close to 8,000 copies, as it saw a sudden rise in sales due to Mother’s Day weekend, reports the Official Charts Company.

‘In My Dreams’ was recorded earlier this year after Military Wives achieved the Christmas Number 1 single with their debut track ‘Wherever You Are’. The song went on to become the fastest selling charity single since Elton John’s ‘Candle In The Wind’ and raised over £500,000 for charity. A donation of £1 per album sold at full price in the UK is being paid to a charitable foundation for Military Wives Choirs, to be administered by SSAFA Forces Help.

The single’s composer Paul Mealor said of the feat:

It’s unbelievably magical to have achieved this – again! The legacy of this is the creation of Military Wives Choirs all over the country. It was brilliant to work again with the Military Wives Choir on ‘In My Dreams’, and how poignant to bring a serving soldier into the music with Jonjo Kerr. I feel proud and humble to be a part of this.

Elsewhere on the list, previous chart topper ‘Our Version Of Events’ by Emeli Sande came in right behind Military Wives, followed by Adele‘s record-breaking ’21’.

This week also saw a new entry from BBC Sound Of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka whose record ‘Home Again’ debuted at Number 4, while X Factor runner-up Marcus Collins clocked in at Number 7 with his self-titled LP. This week also saw a new entry from Michael Bolton, whose ‘The Very Best Of’ compilation came in at Number 11.

In the Singles Chart, Gotye still dominated with his Number 1 single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ for a fourth consecutive week. Nicki Minaj‘s ‘Starships’ followed in the second highest spot, while Alexandra Burke‘s ‘Elephant’ premiered at Number 3. This week also saw Azealia Banks’ single ‘212’ climb 22 spots to Number 24.
